bayernhafen Gruppe continues investments

In the year 2014, bayernhafen Group handled more than 10 million tonnes of cargo via railway and inland waterway at six locations

The investments of the bayernhafen Gruppe to shift cargo transport to the environmentally friendlier railway and inland waterway are taking effect: In 2014 a total of 10.31 million tonnes of cargo were handled via rail and waterway in the six locations Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg and Passau, namely 6.28 million tonnes on the railway and 4.03 million on barges. This is a year-on-year increase of 2.88 per cent for railway transport (6.1 million tonnes in 2013), and a 11.03 per cent increase for waterway transport (3.6 million tonnes in 2013).

The significant increase in cargo handling by barge and rail had also impacted the total freight throughput: in 2014 the bayernhafen group broke the „sound barrier“ of 30 million tonnes for the first time, handling 31,27 million tonnes of cargo by barge, rail and truck on all its six sites. After 29.97 million tonnes in 2013, this represents an increase of 4.33 per cent. Container throughput increased by 4.25 per cent to a total of 413,244 TEU.

In 2014 bayernhafen invested a total of around EUR 12 million, in particular in the preparation and expansion of settlement areas. One of the projects was the successful rehabilitation and area reorganization at the Westhafen-Südkai in the bayernhafen port of Regensburg. This project is important in view of the upcoming expansion of the container terminal.

For 2015, the bayernhafen group plans to invest a total of about EUR 13 million at their sites – including rail infrastructure and cargo handling equipment for the bayernhafen port of Aschaffenburg.
