Cargo unit of Graz-Köflacher railway cleberates jubilee

150 years rail cargo transports on the Graz-Köflach route

Graz-Köflacher Bahn und Busbetrieb GmbH (GKB in short) is celebrating an important jubilee these days. Cargo rail transportations have been operated on the route from Graz to Köflach for 150 years now. It was on 22 June 1859, when the service started transporting brown coal on behalf of the „k.u.k. Militärverwaltung” – the imperial and royal military administration.

Until the 1990s brown coal from several mining regions in western Styria, and raw and finished products from the glass industry dominated the cargo transport of GKB. Today the service is mainly utilized for raw and sawn timber, heating oil and diesel fuel. Shunting services on private rail tracks is another foothold of the company. The annual volume forwarded in national and international rail cargo transport amounts to around 600,000 tons.
