CEOs gather at inaugural 3PL Leadership Council meeting

The first meeting of a new industry group, the 3PL Leadership Council, is set to be held at the Hilton Hotel in Antwerp on November 21st, 2011. Participants include the CEOs and Chairman of industry leaders Norbert-Dentressangle, Hellmann Worldwide, Ahlers, Panalpina, Katoen Natie, Agility, Damco and Rhenus.

The Logistics Leadership Council is a small, invite-only group of senior third party logistics company executives. The purpose of this first meeting is to discuss key non-competitive issues of shared interest to the senior management of the largest 3PLs. The discussion will be attended by a notary public, and will focus on non-competitive issues that LSPs need to coordinate about, but which there has previously been no meeting to discuss as an industry.

This meeting has been prompted by a recognition that the fragmented nature of the European 3PL sector, and the hands-on approach of its leadership, means that 3PLs are behind other sectors in terms of influence on European legislators, and the ability to foster industry-wide innovation, and combat commoditisation. As such, topics on the agenda include more effective lobbying of European legislators, how to combat commoditisation, and how to create and nurture an industry-wide drive for innovation, including ensuring that training for future supply chain talent is encouraged.

Confirmed participants include:
Beat Simon, CEO Europe of Agility Logistics
Christian Leysen, Executive Chairman of Ahlers
Rolf Habben-Jansen, CEO of Damco
Jens Tarnowski, CEO Europe (Air + Sea) of Hellmann Worldwide
Dirk Lannoo, Chairman of Katoen Natie
François Bertreau, CEO of Norbert-Dentressangle
Monika Ribar, CEO of Panalpina
Peter Widmer, CEO of Rhenus
John Parkes, MD of IDS Logistics (the Li and Fung Group)

Independent supply chain and logistics business intelligence provider eyefortransport are facilitating the first 3PL Leadership Council. “This meeting is long overdue, and represents a real opportunity for the 3PL industry,” said eyefortransport’s Executive Director, Katharine O’Reilly. “With the top 10 companies in the industry holding less than a 30% share in Europe, this is a very fragmented industry, and there is a huge risk that 3PLs miss a chance to have an active role in shaping the future of the sector. Our hope is that this inaugural meeting is a step in that direction.”
