Customers only allowed to take three tomatoes home

Major grocery stores Morrisons and Asda have announced that they are limiting the amount of produce customers can purchase after ‘extreme weather’ disrupts fresh produce supply chains. 

Asda has said that it will be limiting the sale of produce such as peppers, lettuce, and tomatoes to three per customer, while Morrisons has said that it will be introducing limits of two on products such as cucumbers.

Other major grocery stores like Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Lidl, and Sainsbury’s have yet to limit goods to customers.

According to the Fresh Produce Journal, a range of extreme weather conditions such as heavy flooding, cold temperatures, as well as cancelled ships have led to supply issues from Spain and Morocco.

The shortages are expected to last for a couple of weeks, until the UK growing season for such produce begins.

A spokesperson from Asda said: “Like other supermarkets, we are experiencing sourcing challenges on some products that are grown in southern Spain and north Africa.”
