DB Schenker launches daily Transsib container train to China

Transsib container train of DB Schenker Rail Automotive helps BMW to gain time on the route from Leipzig to Shenyang:

DB Schenker Rail Automotive, the automotive specialist for rail cargo transport within the Deutsche Bahn, was entrusted by BMW with the transportation of car parts from Leipzig to Shenyang in the north east of China. A train carrying 40 containers left the throughput rail station Leipzig-Wahren on September 29. This is the fourth container train that carries parts and components for vehicle assembly to the BMW plant Shenyang in the province of Liaoning. By the end of November frequency shall be increased to daily departures from Leipzig.

“With 23 days transit time these direct trains take less than time than transport by sea vessel and less than half the time to the hinterland in China. This is an important impulse for the Euro-Asian land bridge“, says Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch, CEO Transport and Logistics DB Mobility Logistics AG.

The routing of the container train goes via Poland, Byelorussia and Russia to China. DB Schenker Rail operates the trains in cooperation with the partner railway companies. The containers are moved by crane to different gauges two times – to the Russian broad gauge at the border of Poland and Byelorussia and to normal gauge at the Russian-Chinese border in Manzhouli.

DB Schenker counts among the biggest logistics partners of the worldwide automotive industry. In 2010 about three million finished vehicles were transported on the railway. About 250 trains – loaded with car parts and new cars – are operated daily between Portugal and Russia, Scandinavia and Turkey. The contract logistics unit of DB Schenker is partner of the automotive industry for the production of six million vehicles per year.
