Deutsche Bahn: Plans for new intermodal terminal in Regensburg

New road/rail transhipment terminal of Deutsche Bahn in eastbavarian Regensburg could be ready to start operation by 2020

Deutsche Bahn intends to add a new terminal to its road/rail transhipment station in Regensburg. This was announced at a meeting of Deutsche Bahn and Regensburg’s mayor Joachim Wolbergs. Plans for the new construction will be made within the next two years. The construction period will take about 18 to 24 months, meaning the operation can be started in 2020 at earliest.

The new terminal, where among others containers can be loaded from trucks to railway, will have a performance capacity of 600 to 800 cargo units per day. In addition to expanding the Regensburg-East site, the planning involves a feasibility study of a site with direct connection to the major corridor Regensburg – Munich between Burgweinting and Obertraubling.

„The Regensburg location and therefore the demand for rail freight services have been rising sharply in recent years, especially because of the automotive industry established in the region. The capacities of our terminals have reached their limit today. Thus, in consultation with the Federal Government and the City of Regensburg, and DB Netz AG we want to start planning a new terminal module in Regensburg soon,“ Alexander Stern, CEO of Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene – Straße GmbH, said in Regensburg.

Mayor Joachim Wolbergs: „A business location can not develop without effective logistics. Even for environmental reasons, it is important that railway plays a big role here. Therefore, we are very pleased that the rail subsidiary DUSS is further committed in Regensburg, and wants to strengthen transhipment from trucks to rail. We will do our utmost to ensure that necessary federal funding comes quickly.“

On the existing terminal in the Regensburg cargo center close to the A3 motorway, almost 150,000 containers were handled last year, which means more than 500 a day. Thus the terminal has reached its capacity limit.

The transshipment station is among other things important for the resident industrial enterprises in the region and their connection to the seaports.
