DFDS targets fleet-wide emission reductions

DFDS has launched a climate action plan to “consistently reduce” carbon emissions and ultimately become carbon neutral by 2050.

DFDS will also focus on long-term ferry fuel replacement consisting of renewable energy stored in the form of ammonia, hydrogen, or methanol.

The final main element of the plan is to focus on reducing emissions from trucks, terminals, facilities, and offices. DFDS said it would focus on more sustainable methods like electric trucks and equipment used in port terminals.

DFDS said its network emitted around two million tons of CO2 in 2019 of which 90% was from ferries and the rest from logistics operations.

“I am very happy that we now have an ambitious and comprehensive climate action plan in place. It clearly states how we can and will take responsibility for the environment. The plan will also help us stay relevant as a provider of ferry and logistics services for both freight customers and passengers in the coming decades,” said Torben Carlsen, chief executive of DFDS.
