EU faces demand for sustainable food supply chains

A petition was delivered to the European Commission this week calling for the EU to support a UN treaty designed to bring greater fairness to international trade.

The European Environmental Bureau, a network of environmental citizens’ organisations, said that there are a growing number of European citizens demanding sustainable food supply chains.

More than 7,500 signatures were collected as part of the campaign to support the UN treaty. According to the Bureau, the UN Treaty will mean that the operations of any corporation around the world will be regulated and that corporate abuses in all supply chains will be punished.

“Citizens, business and policy makers get lost in a myriad of agreements and voluntary measures that regulate each commodity,” said Eva Izquierdo, global policies project officer, European Environment Bureau. “We propose simplicity. One single alternative to regulate abuses in global supply chains: the UN treaty.”
