Gefco is positioning itself for Opel in the Port of Vienna

Opel counts on Gefco Austria’s logistics expertise with immediate effect. Around 10,000 new vehicles per year will be distributed via the Port of Vienna, a company of Wien Holding, to vehicle dealers all over Austria. Therefore Gefco increases its storage areas at the Danube bank in Freudenau by adding more than 6,000 m², and will set up a new business location there.

Every week the international network of Gefco will deliver up to 220 Opel vehicles to the Port of Vienna. Most of them come from the Opel plant in Spain (Zaragoza), will be shipped on the seaway to Livorno, Italy and transported to Vienna on the railway. Some of the vehicles will arrive on trucks from the Opel plants in Germany and Poland.

“We are pleased to have a competent and experienced partner at our side with Gefco Austria, and thus being able to optimise the way our vehicles take to the Port of Vienna and to the vehicle dealers across Austria”, says Mag. Alexander Struckl, CEO Opel Austria about the new logistics solution.

The newly created 6,000 m² warehouse space in the Freudenau port provides space for 300 to 400 additional cars; some of them will be redistributed directly after delivery to Austrian car dealers, others are stored there until they are ordered by Opel trading partners. Gefco and the Port of Vienna are togethere in charge of the entire logistics chain: from the control on the train or truck and unloading and careful storage of cars, to redistribution throughout Austria.

“Gefco and the Port of Vienna haven been cooperating successfully in the segment of automotive logistics for many years. The order placed by Opel, confirms our professional we perform at this location. Now we run our own location in the Port of Vienna, where our employees are committed to provide efficient and reliable support for our automotive customers,” said Peter Vanek, Managing Director Gefco Austria.

Mag. Doris Pulker-Rohrhofer, Technical Managing Director Port of Vienna, is pleased with the very good cooperation with Gefco and is glad “that we can successfully offer our services to the entire industry.”

“Even now, 80 percent of all new cars in eastern Austria are handled in the Port of Vienna. Through the cooperation with Gefco, we can expand this number by about 20 percent, and achieve a significant increase in the automotive segment,” explains Peter Hanke CEO, Wien Holding.

Gefco, as a European market leader in automotive logistics, covers all logistical areas, from global procurement of production parts to distribution of finished vehicles. The Austrian subsidiary operates five offices with approximately 60 employees.
