Growth in all transhipment segments in the port of Hamburg

Port of Hamburg consolidates its position as Europe’ second largest container port and expects further rising sea cargo volumes in 2014

In 2013 the port of Hamburg saw a total cargo throughput of 139 million tonnes, which is about 6.2 per cent growth year-on-year. In the container segment import business accounted for 4.8 million TEU (+ 4.3%), and export for 4.5 million TEU (+ 4.6%), respectively passing the quay facilities the reporting period. The general cargo segment with a total of 96.8 million tonnes (+ 5.7%), as well as bulk cargo throughput at 42.3 million tonnes (+ 7.2%), showed above-average growth.

The main growth driver was container throughput at 9.3 million TEU, up 4.4 per cent on 2012. This development was mainly the result of transport to the Northern and Baltic Sea region – which was the main growth driver for Europe traffic – and of the again growing container traffic with Asia and China in particular. 4.9 million TEU were handled in Hamburg for imports or exports to or from Asia. This means a year-on-year increase of 3 per cent.

Against the trend in the four Northern European continental ports (Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg, Bremerhaven) the port of Hamburg was able to gain market shares in container transport. Germany’s largest universal port has a current market share of 26.2 per cent (+ 1.3 per cent). Hamburg is ranked 15th among the global container ports.

Hafen Hamburg Marketing (HHM), the marketing organisation of the north German seaport  expects a moderate rise in sea cargo throughput in 2014.
