Hamburg sees box volumes grow 5.2% in Q1

As the last of the European ‚big three‘, the port of Hamburg today published its throughput volumes for the first quarter of 2012.

Between January and March Hamburg handled a total of about 2.2 Mteu, up 5.2% from the first quarter of 2011. The German main port thus ranks second in Europe after Rotterdam (2.9 Mteu in Q1, a year-on-year decline of 3.8% – see related news) and before Antwerp (just under 2.2 Mteu in Q1, a year-on-year increase of 0.7% – see related news). The total weight of containers and breakbulk increased by 7.9% to 23.1 Mtons, mainly driven my strong exports of containerised cargoes.

Container volumes related to Asia and the Far East declined by 5% year-on-year and reached 1.2 Mteu, while traffic to the Baltic Sea region soared by 19.6% to more than 531,000 teu. The transatlantic trade to the Americas also increased considerably (+33.3%) and totalled at 279,000 teu.  The trade volumes to Africa (55.000 teu / -6.2%) and Australia-Pacific (8.000 teu / -9.7%) both declined notably. According to port officials, the decline in Hamburg’s core business, the Far East mainline does not represent a downward trend, but has been attributed to one-off effects of the recent restructuring of the big alliances and their service patterns.
