Hupac pushes its Company Shuttles and invests into mega trailers

Hupac AG’s profit was up by 15% to CHF 7.5 million for the year 2014; transalpine transport volume stagnated in the reporting period

Investing into its new business unit “Company Shuttle” and its own rolling stock, Hupac, the Swiss operator of combined transport, is committed to maintaining and strengthening its leading market position. For the mega trailer segment, the company ordered 100 twin pocket wagons, to be delivered by the end of 2015. Fort traffic with Russia, 100 freight wagons for the Russian broad gauge were delivered last year; 100 more are on order. This year a new order will add 100 units to the existing fleet of 90ft freight wagons.

The focus with the development of the network lies on the mega trailer offer for transalpine transport. About 100 weekly shuttle trains are operated within the Hupac network on the 4 metres corridors throughout Switzerland and Austria. Via Löschberg/Simplon the semi-trailer segment grew 60 per cent, namely on the routes from Novara to Ludwigshafen, Cologne, Lübeck and Rotterdam. In early 2015 the operational concept Scandinavia was changed. Via Cologne, they can now also offer regular connections for mega trailers in the Swedish market between Malmö and Novara.

In the 2014 financial year Hupac transported 660,109 road consignments by rail. While the business of transalpine transports stagnated, Hupac was able to gain on the East-West routes. Hupac will face new challenges throughout this year. These include the euro’s loss of value relative to the Swiss franc, improving the quality of the rail system and increasing the productivity of the rail infrastructure. The opening of theGotthard base tunnel shall add a new impetus to the shift of transport.

Hupac is the leading combined transport operator through Switzerland and one of the market leaders in Europe. The company operates 100 trains each day between Europe’s main economic areas and as far away as Russia and the Far East. The Hupac Group is composed of 13 companies with locations in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Poland and Russia and employs around 400 persons.
