Johnson backs Hermes zero emissions initiative

Boris Johnson has praised Hermes for introducing 44 zero emission vehicles to its London delivery network, which the firm claims will reduce its carbon footprint by 146 tonnes per year.

The vehicles, 100 per cent electric Renault Kangoos, will be used by the carrier for its ‘last mile delivery’ service within London. In addition, the electricity is sustainably sourced, which Hermes claims does not contribute to the pollution caused by traditional power stations.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “Hermes is setting a fantastic example for London’s logistics companies, all of whom have their part to play in helping to improve London’s air quality. It is an urgent challenge, which affects the health and wellbeing of all Londoners.”

The scheme compliments Johnson’s proposals for the introduction of an ultra low emission zone in central London from 2020, and follows in the footsteps of measures set by the London mayor, which has seen thousands of the most polluting buses and taxis removed from use.

Martijn de Lange, operations director, Hermes, said: “Under the new initiative Hermes will dramatically reduce the number of miles travelled to fulfill deliveries in central London, from almost 330,000 miles to 65,000 miles a year. We welcome the opportunity to support the Mayor’s widespread backing of ultra low emission vehicles and his introduction an ultra low emission zone.”

Alongside the reduced carbon emissions, the vehicles also save on parking space being 40 per cent smaller than the existing fleet.
