Konecranes to provide Guyana’s first mobile harbour cranes to support major port growth

Finnish specialist in cranes and lifting equipment Konecranes is to fulfil an order for two mobile harbour cranes – the first to be installed in Guyana. The cranes will play a supporting role in the growth of the Port of Georgetown in the country’s capital.

The order came from two port operating companies in Guyana – Muneshwers Ltd and John Fernandes Ltd. The companies jointly ordered two Generation 6 Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbor Cranes as part of a planned regional cargo hub in Georgetown.

Konecranes says that the mobile cranes, expected to be delivered in Q2 2023, will enable the port to receive a much wider variety of cargo ships, including much larger vessels and gearless ships (without onboard loading and unloading equipment) to be handled. They will primarily be used for container handling but can also handle general cargo.

Chief Executive of Muneshwers Ltd Robin Muneshwer said: “As we planned our hub, it soon became clear that the right equipment for us was mobile harbour cranes, and we made site visits to Jamaica and Florida where we could see cranes of different brands in action at customer sites.”

Philip Fernandes, Chief Executive of John Fernandes Ltd, explained that the decision to go with Generation 6 Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbor Cranes was down to their “performance, reliability, and robustness as well as their outstanding eco-efficiency”.

Konecranes is focusing on decreasing its customers’ carbon footprint in their lifting operations – a policy it calls ‘Ecolifting’.
