Linz Airport becomes DHL’s RFS-hub with a focus on pharmaceuticals

Pharma/Life Siences: DHL Global Forwarding Austria to open a hub for Road Feeder Services at the Linz Airport in the first quarter 2015

The airfreight centre of the Blue Danube Airport in Linz is taking final preparations to establish a road feeder services-hub for pharmaceutical products in the ambient temperature range of 15 – 25 ° C. Before the end of the first quarter of 2015, the GDP-compliant system with 600 m² covered area will start operation.

Trailer trucks will carry products of the pharmaceutical/life science industry on the fastest way to Brussels, where nine times a week, a Boeing 747 freighter of DHL Aviation will take off for Cincinnati, US-state Ohio. On this route secure cargo capacity will be available to DHL Global Forwarding Austria from the start of operations in Upper Austria. The physical goods transport will be carried out in Envirotainer containers („The Active Cold Chain“).

Apart from western Austria the catchment area of the RFS hub in Linz includes also parts of the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia. Initially, the focus will be on the areas of oncology and generic drugs. Later other pharmaceutical products are to follow.
