Maersk Line CEO calls for change in liner shipping business

Eivind Koldung of Maersk Line says the time has come to introduce new business models with customer focus in the global container shipping industry

„Changing the way we think about shipping.” Accordng to this motto Eivind Kolding, CEO of Maersk Line, calls the representatives of global liner shipping industry to reorganise their business models. If container shipping is to secure its licence to operate in the future, the industry needs to change now, the top manager said in his speech at the Terminal Operations Europe Conference (TOC) in Antwerp recently.

Kolding thinks the kind of handling container transportations and the form of cooperation between shipping companies and their customers from forwarding and industry has to be improved. Still half of all containers arrive in delay at the destination port. Awarding orders to shipping enterprises is still a very complex task.

“What if placing a container shipping order was as easy as buying an airline ticket?”, Maersk Line is calling for solutions to facilitate booking for shippers. From Kolding’s point of view another target of the industry must be the reduction of environmental damage caused by liner shipping services.
