Maersk Line orders ten 18,000 TEU ships

Triple-E vessels of Danish Maersk Line are the most efficient container shipping carriers

Having ordered ten ships of each 18,000 TEU capacity, with an option for an additional 20 vessels, the Danish Maersk Line opens a new chapter of the global container shipping business. CEO Eivind Kolding refers to the carriers ordered from the South Korean DSME Shipyard as the world’s largest and most efficient container vessels. Each vessel will cost USD 190 million. Delivery is scheduled for between 2013 and 2015.

400 metres long and 59 metres wide, the Triple-E vessels are the Maersk Line’s equipment for the expected volume growth in liner shipping trade from Asia to Europe of five to eight per cent per year. The newbuildings are able to carry 16 per cent or 2,500 TEU more containers per departure than the 15,500 TEU “Emma Maersk“. Comparing the CO2 emission per container, the Triple-E vessels will produce around 20 per cent less.

According to Maersk Line the new vessel will consume approximately 35 per cent less fuel per container than the 13,100 TEU vessels.
