Maritime East Midlands nearing completion
“Significant progress” has been made on the construction of Maritime Transport’s East Midlands Gateway (EMG) rail terminal at Castle Donington, which begins operating at the start of 2020
The interchange has accepted three Sany reach stackers and a further two Sany container handlers.
The Sany machines are a part of a series of asset acquisitions that Maritime has made over the last few months across its network, including a new depot in Avonmouth, hundreds of vehicles and trailers, and two Konecranes are situated at its rail terminal in Tamworth.
John Bailey, operations director at Maritime, said: ‘We believe the numerous benefits EMG has to offer will quickly be realised, and so having these machines ready to go to work will be crucial in enabling us to meet all customer requirements.”
The 740,520 sq ft interchange will be capable of handling sixteen 775m long freight trains every day. It has seen more than 50,000 tonnes of concrete poured for its handling operations to begin.
Planning permission was granted earlier this year for a three-storey, 20,000 sq. ft. office at EMG that will act as a headquarters for Maritime’s rail subdivision, Maritime Intermodal.
The new facility will act as a hub for customer appointments, training workshops, and day-to-day operations, with state-of-the-art facilities for staff to utilise.
Planning permission was also granted for a vehicle maintenance unit, enabling Maritime to carry out container repairs and conversions as well as trailer servicing and minor vehicle repairs to its fleet.
EMG is already occupied by Amazon, Shop Direct, and K+N.
The area will ultimately hold up to 7000,000 sq ft of warehousing.
