MOL and NOL expand fleets

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) orders two 8,600 TEU ships, and agrees to charter five 14,000 TEU ships; NOL orders ten new ships and upgrades an existing order.

MOL has decided to order two 8,600 TEU containerships from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, with delivery scheduled for 2013. Along with eight 8,100 TEU ships already in operation, the new vessels will be deployed on Asia – Europe routes. MOL has also reached an agreement with Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) on a three-year charter for five 14,000 TEU containerships. The five chartered ships will be delivered in 2013 – 2014 and will serve with the other five operated by APL on Asia – Europe routes.

In related news, NOL recently signed contracts with Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co for twelve new container vessels.
The contract with Hyundai Samho is for ten 14,000 TEU vessels, five of which will be chartered to MOL. The other five will be operated by NOL’s shipping arm, APL, on existing Asia – Europe routes.
The contract with Daewoo is for two 9,200 TEU vessels. NOL has also upgraded an existing order for ten 8,400 TEU vessels from Daewoo to ten 9,200 TEU vessels.
