More cargo volume for Austria’s road hauliers in 2014

Road freight transport volume carried by Austrian companies increased by 7.4 per cent 349.5 million tonnes in the year 2014

In 2014, Austrian companies carried 349.5 million tonnes of goods on 26.8 million laden journeys (2013: 25 million). According to calculations of Statistics Austria transport volume increased by 7.4 per cent compared to the preceding year (2013: 325.4 million t).

The transport performance, achieved on Austrian and foreign territory, increased in the reporting year by 4.3 per cent to a total of 25.3 billion tonne-kilometres (2013: 24.2 billion tkm). This increase resulted exclusively from a growth in the national transport performance: In Austria a transport performance of 16.6 billion tkm (+7%) was achieved; on foreign territory its remained stable at 8.7 billion tkm. National transport hence accounted for 65.7 per cent (2013: 64.1%) of the total transport performance.

The cargo volume in domestic traffic increased by 7.7 per cent to 323.2 million tons and in cross-border goods receipt or shipment by 2.2 per cent to 10.2 million tonnes, and 6.7 per cent to 10.7 million tons, respectively. The largest percentage-increase (11.4%) to 1.7 million tonnes was recorded by transit, which is rather insignificant in terms of quantity. Only other foreign traffic (3.7 million tonnes) showed a slight decline (-0.4%) compared to last year.

The transport capacity in Austria and abroad increased in almost all transport sectors. In domestic traffic there was an increase by 6.3 per cent to 14.7 billion tonne-kilometers, in cross-border goods receipt by 1 per cent (3.7 billion tkm) and in freight shipping by 1.3 per cent (4.2 billion tkm). Transit showed the highest increase in percentage by 16.6 per cent to 1.3 billion tkm. In other foreign transport (trips operated with HGVs registered in Austria that take place exclusively abroad) a loss by 7.2 per cent to 1.3 billion tonne-kilometers was registered.

In road cargo transport by Austrian companies, domestic traffic accounts for 92.5 per cent (2013 92,3%) of the total tonnage. The lion’s share (84.7%) of the domestic traffic was carried out within a distance of 80 kilometers. The shares of the cross-border traffic (receipt 2.9% and shipping 3.1%) and transit traffic (0.5%) and the other international traffic (1.1%) were significantly lower.

Compared to last year the share of commercial freight traffic at 55.7 per cent, and the works traffic remained at 44.3 per cent (2013: 55.6% to 44.4%) of the total transport volume remained almost stable. What was significantly higher than the share of works traffic, was commercial freight transport in cross-border goods receipt (77.3%) and goods delivery (70.8%), in transit (70.2%) and in other international traffic (76.6%). In domestic traffic, these differences were slightly lower: the share of the vehicle industry was 54.2 per cent, of works traffic 45.8 per cent.
