More tracks and lifting capacity in bayernhafen Passau

In bayernhafen Passau, the brand-new mobile port crane was officially opened on 19 February. The LHM 420 machine can handle single loads weighing up to 120 tonnes – almost twice the size of its predecessor. It is the world’s first mobile Liebherr port crane that complies with emission control level V.

The LHM 420 can handle bulk goods, general cargo and containers. It can also handle of heavy cargo such as entire wind turbines. Although the relatively light wind blades could be moved with the previous crane – an additional external crane was required for the heavy towers and units with unit weights of up to 100 tonnes.

Around ten years after the opening of the trimodal port location in Passau-Schalding, the bayernhafen Group has once again significantly expanded its infrastructure in Passau: the rail loading tracks at the quay were extended by around 280 meters to a total quay length of around 880 meters. The storage capacity for bulk materials is also being increased from two to ten silos with a total capacity of approximately 1,800 m³. Customers can use these as trimodal transfer stations and for temporary storage.

In total, the investment volume for the renewed expansion of the infrastructure in the Danube port amounts to around EUR 4.2 million. The bayernhafen Group thus contributes to the transfer of transports to inland waterway and rail, and creates the best conditions for the connection of inland waterway and rail to an integrated transport concept.

Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer, who officially commissioned the new port crane on 18 February, regards the waterway as an important mode of transport. “Our aim is to combine transport efficiently across the different modes of transport and to exploit the potential for shifting transport volumes to inland waterways,” he said.

For Passau’s Lord Mayor Jürgen Dupper, the successful history of the that started in 1900, has been continued with this new mobile port crane: “These are big investments that help to develop the location.”

The bayernhafen Passau is Bavaria’s gateway to and from Southeastern Europe. For ships coming from southeastern Europe and Austria, this is the last Danube port before the not expanded section of Vilshofen-Straubing. As a certified handling company, the bayernhafen Group also offers unloading services directly to shipping operators in Passau, which saves them costs.

In order to shift long-distance freight traffic to the more environmentally friendly modes of transport by inland waterway and rail, the interfaces in the inland ports must be strengthened. Bayernhafen consistently pursues this strategy at its six locations in Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg and Passau.
