Port of Hamburg: First expert excursion for Austrian exporters

Premiere in the Port of Hamburg: Delegates of 16 reputable Austrian export companies recently gained insight into the diverse world of maritime logistics

In Hamburg 16 Austrian exporters were recently informed about the performance of Germany’s biggest overseas port. The managing directors and logistics managers from the segments mechanical engineering and construction, food and beverages production, iron and steel production, were invited by the Port of Hamburg’s marketing branch in Vienna to participate in a two-days expert excursion to Hamburg. The information and tour program for the port customers included container, multi purpose and bulk transhipment facilities, shipping agencies and a port tour on the Elbe river.

During the discourse of China Shipping, experts discussed about ship planning, capacity utilisation and scheduling of container ships. Handling of heavy and large machine and plant components was in the focus of the later visit of the Buss Hansa Terminals (BHT). At their visit at the terminal the Austrian shippers gained background information about today’s necessary crane capacities for transhipment, hints to load securing and stuffing for maritime transport, as well as insights into the planning of special transportations in the ro-ro-segment. Afterwards Germany’s biggest transhipment terminal for coal and iron ore – the Hansaport – was presented to the guests as the world’s only fully automated bulk cargo terminal.

“The program of this, our first, expert excursion was well received among participants, who also seized this as an opportunity to exchange experiences. The vivid mixture of expert discourses and visits to all cargo segments met all segments of the participants. There was a very positive resonance of Austrian direct shippers, which is why we will repeat this offer again for sure“, said Alexander Till, Head of the Port of Hamburg’s marketing office in Vienna.

The port of Hamburg is the most important port for Austria’s container export. In 2012 about 289,000 TEU were transported via Hamburg with 80 weekly container train services from and to Austria. Among others the most important export goods include machines, paper, wood, chemical products as well as food, iron and steel. Austrian imports via the Elbe port include mainly electro technical products, foodstuffs, coffee and cocoa, textiles and other finished goods.
