Rising toll charges baffle RHA

Birmingham M6 toll road operators Midlands Expressway are to increase road charges by 20p-50p per HGV dependent on the journey made and the Road Haulage association is baffled by this.

The M6 toll road is not a route of choice for many hauliers as they cannot afford it and to spend £11 pounds, “on a one-way journey, let alone using every day, is simply out of the question,” said RHA chief executive Richard Burnett.

“So why have the Midlands Expressway decided to increase the rate for HGVs now – at a time when the price of diesel has just risen by another two pence per litre – adding over £800 per vehicle to a trucker’s annual operating costs?”

Burnett adds that what seems like a small increase of 50p per truck won’t make a difference, it could deter smaller hauliers from using the road all together.

Charges for night-time journeys will remain unchanged.
