Schenker & Co AG to establish new production system for land transport

Schenker & Co AG to offer two separate tracks for international groupage and FTL/LTL from 2014; four future gateways for groupage transport in Austria

Under the title "Governance@Land" Schenker & Co AG Austria starts a program to redesign the world of products and the production structures in the business field ‘European land transport‘ these days. The previously practiced model approach from one source will be replaced by separate systems to handle international cargo transport and FTL/LTL. This had been announced by CEO Kurt Leidinger on 10 July in a small circle of expert journalists.

This change is part of an international program of DB Schenker Logistics to optimise processes and income in ‘European land transport‘, which will be implemented gradually in the period from January 2014 to the end of 2015. Until then, the company will be increasing their own fleet of trailers and swap bodies for FTL/LTL operations in Europe from currently 2,500 to 3,500 units. The investment into improving the accompanying IT structures amounts to EUR 200 million.

In Austria, the introduction of new product lines “system” – for international cargo transport – and “direct” for the FTL/LTL segment in the period from the beginning to mid-2014 is on the program. In this context Kurt Leidinger, CEO Schenker & Co AG Austria and Southeast Europe, promises customers improvements in service quality and predictability of transport as well as tailored logistics packages. DB Schenker Logistics’ two pillars of quantity and efficiency increase shall improve yields in ‘European land transport‘.

The control of the FTL/LTL operations will be carried out by eight EPU (European Production Units). One of these ‘nodes‘ is set up in Austria.

The international groupage services to/from Austria run in the new production scheme via the ‘gateways‘ Vienna, Hörsching near Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck, which are connected by daily shuttle services with other offices throughout the country. The handling scheme previously used in the area of national cargo remains unchanged. Also, there will be no job cuts, Kurt Leidinger stresses explicitly.
