Spectacular heavy cargo in bayernhafen Regensburg

In the Bavarian port of Regensburg, two spectacular heavy cargoes were handled recently. At the beginning of July, a 44-ton autocrane hung on the hook itself. The equipment destined for a recipient in Bulgaria was loaded by two port cranes to an inland waterway vessel.

In the previous week before two lock gates were handled. The 15.3 meters long, 4.65 meters wide, 4.2 meters high and approximately 55 tonne constructions are designed for the Cernavoda lock in Romania. The precise loading of the lock gates and the autocrane to the inland waterway vessel was carried out using two port cranes at the Westhafen in a twin process involving both cranes.

The lock gates made in Plauen were transported by truck to Regensburg. The journey from Regensburg to Cernovada by inland waterway takes ten to twelve days. In Cernovada begins the Danube-Black Sea canal, which flows into the Black Sea after about 65 kilometers at Constanza.

The heavy goods handling was organised by DTU Donau-Transport- und Umschlaggesellschaft mbH, based in the port of Regensburg, a joint venture of Kuehne + Nagel Deutschland and the MSG Main-Schifffahrts-Genossenschaft. The shipment was carried out by Panta Rhei Befrachtungs- und Speditions GmbH, a 65% subsidiary of Kuehne + Nagel Euroshipping.

“Heavy and large-volume goods can be transported safely and in an environment-friendly manner on the inland waterway,” says Joachim Zimmermann, Managing Director of the bayernhafen group. “While heavy transports on the motorway are much more complex.”

The bayernhafen Regensburg is a hub for freight traffic throughout the entire Bavarian region and is the leader in shipping cargo by vessel in Bavaria. The port makes a significant contribution to the supply of businesses and citizens and provides regional products with access to international transport chains and markets. The port area covers 183 hectares, which corresponds to an area of over 250 football fields. 80 companies with around 1,800 jobs are located in the port.

The bayernhafen Regensburg is part of the Bavarian port group including the ports of Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth and Passau. The locations of the bayernhafen group are an important factor for machine and plant construction in this region thanks to their good accessibility and handling areas for oversized plant parts such as transformers.
