Transnet reinstates Gama

Siyabonga Gama has been reinstated to Transnet’s executive committee following a review of his dismissal for incidents of misconduct.  Sharon Gill reports from South Africa …

According to Transnet spokesperson Mboniso Sigonyela, Gama’s reinstatement is subject to a final written warning, given the fact that he was not found guilty of corruption and/or dishonesty.

Back in 2005 when Gama’s integrity was called into question by the media, Transnet jumped to his defence, saying it had no reason to suspect anything untoward and was not investigating anything against him.

Following further allegations in 2008, Transnet commissioned an independent investigation which revealed irregularities and resulted in Gama’s suspension in 2009 to face charges related to the awarding of one contract to an inexperienced company and another valued at almost double the ZAR10 million he was authorised to approve.

Gama was summarily dismissed in 2010.

Following his reinstatement, Gama will be based in the chairman’s office until the new group chief executive finalises the executive team.
