Truck market up 41pc

The truck market is now 41 per cent up on last year, with registrations reaching 10,681 for the first three months of the year, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

The bounce back follows the depression in the market caused by the introduction of Euro 6 last year.

The van market rose 22.3 per cent on last year to reach 97,775 registrations for the first three months.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “Demand for commercial vehicles remains buoyant in 2015, with both vans and trucks achieving a strong first quarter performance yet again,” said “This continued upturn, and the third month of consecutive growth, can be attributed to higher levels of consumer and business confidence.”

The market was strongest for artics – registrations in the first three months were up 69.1 per cent to 4,350. By comparison, the market for rigids was up 26.6 per cent to 6,331.

“In the van and truck markets, there has been a clear shift towards the larger vehicles in the sector in the first three months of the year. Both 2.5 – 3.5t vans and 3-axle artic trucks have seen a sharp increase in registrations as operators seek to make their fleets as flexible and cost-effective as possible,” said Hawes.

In the market for trucks over 6 tonnes, DAF took market leadership with 19.2 per cent. It was followed by Mercedes Benz on 16.4 per cent and Scania on 13 per cent for the first three months.
