viadonau launches its initiative “Recycling products by barge“

Some recycling products are suited for a shift to waterborne transport thanks to their characteristics and requirements

On 23 April the first workshop of the working initiative “Recycling products by barge“ took place on the MS Negrelli in the port of Ennshafen. Invited by viadonau, 36 participants from the shipping industry, Danube ports and transhipment operators as well as nautical and forwarding companies discussed about the potential of transport of secondary raw materials by barge. In line with the focus on scrap metal and scrap, they discussed possibilities to shift these goods groups to the Danube waterway, new contacts and discuss concrete business cases.

With this new work initiative, viadonau wants to create a neutral platform for the exchange of knowledge and information on the topics Danube logistics and recycling industry, promote networking in the sector and opportunities for business-to-business contacts.

Special attention was paid to the expert presentations by Alfred Klement, Managing Director Donau Metall, and Paul Losbichler, Managing Director Schaufler GmbH. In his presentation Klement explained that among other things the connection to the Danube waterway was a good reason for settling down in the Ennshafen port.

Schaufler GmbH benefits from the direct access to the Danube, and can make greater use of inland waterway transport, in particular for recycling products, Losbichler pointed out. „Scrap is not always the same as scrap“ he said, and explained that there were big differences in terms of quality and price depending on the product group. With this in mind, the possibilities for transport by barge must be judged.
