Vienna Airport: Positive development in the air freight segment

Airlines use larger aircraft to call at the Vienna airport, boosting the development of air cargo volume in the first quarter of 2014

Air freight business shows an upwards trend at the Vienna airport. In the first three months of 2014 a total cargo volume of 64,107 tonnes had been handled. This means a 6.8 per cent rise compared to the period from January to March 2013. In April the cargo volume (air cargo + trucking) rose 9.1 per cent to 23,332 tonnes. The 1.9 per cent decline in the number of flight movements to 51,220 in the first three months of 2014 shows the continuing trend toward the use of larger aircraft with airlines.

“Even though traffic development was rather flat during the first quarter 2014, we remain very optimistic for the full year. The new additions to our summer flight plan and the increase in frequencies are already noticeable, and we recorded strong growth of 7.8 per cent in the number of passengers during April. The new long-haul connections and new destinations should also provide good impulses for traffic growth“, indicated Julian Jäger, member of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG.
