Wincanton-Dairy Crest partnership set to slash carbon emissions

A partnership between Wincanton and Dairy Crest is set to deliver carbon emission reductions of up to 1,100 tonnes.

Wincanton and Dairy Crest have completed the rollout of 36 new vehicles to improve the efficiency of milk collections from 1,350 farmers across the UK.

Wincanton works in partnership with Dairy Crest to collect milk from farms across the UK and deliver it to Dairy Crest processing plants, from where it is distributed to customers. The 36 new vehicles were designed with new features to increase fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions by up to 53 tonnes per year.

The new vehicles also allow more volume to be collected due to greater capacity created through the use of draw bar combinations. Consequently, fewer vehicles are required, scheduling is improved, fuel usage is reduced by around 160,000 litres and carbon emissions are reduced by around 425 tonnes per year.

The vehicles will also be installed with an Isotrak telematics system, delivering further carbon emission savings of up to 183 tonnes per year.

According to Wincanton’s managing director Chris Kingshott, the vehicles feature a new pumping system that increases the speed at which milk collections are conducted, and have a five minute idle shut-down device. These features can also reduce both fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
