Bremen ports are “highly satisfied” with 2014 cargo throughput

Automobile throughput sets new record, while the trend for container logistics is stable despite the difficult economic environment

“In 2014, the ports of Bremen stayed on course despite the difficult economic environment,” said Martin Günthner, Senator for Economic Affairs and Ports, at the presentation of the updated throughput figures for 2014. Accordingly last year’s total throughput of all seaborne cargo in Bremen and Bremerhaven reached a level of 78.3 million tonnes, which was a slight decrease of 0.6 per cent.

The port group was particularly successful in the automobile segment: In 2014, they handled 2,269,512 vehicles. This was an increase of 4.2 per cent year-on-year. On the medium term, Günthner expects throughput figures to continue to rise at Europe’s largest auto terminal. This will entail further growth in rail transports.

In the container segment, the ports of Bremen maintained the previous high level in 2014, reaching a figure of 5,795,624 TEU (down 0.6 per cent). In the general cargo segment – containers and break bulk – the ports of Bremen booked a figure of 68 million tonnes in 2014. This was down 1.2 per cent compared with 2013. On the other hand, the figures for bulk cargo which is handled primarily in Bremen-City, achieved a level of 10.2 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 3.2 per cent.

In 2014, Bremen-City succeeded in raising total cargo throughput by 2.1 per cent to 12.9 million tonnes (2013: 12.6 million tonnes). As a result of the slight decrease in container handling, the total weight of seaborne cargo handled in Bremerhaven declined from 66.2 in 2013 to 65.4 million tonnes.

The number of merchant ships calling at Bremen and Bremerhaven in 2014 remained virtually unchanged at 7,379 – just one less than in 2013.
