Transport ministry: Austria best logistics location in Central Europe

Austrian transport ministry gives the go-ahead for the overall transport plan to strengthen the international competitiveness of Austria as a logistics location

Austria’s Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) has set up an overall transport plan for cargo transport and logistics in Austria. Involving representatives of service providers from industry, trade, transportation and logistics as well as social partners and scientists in the work process, they drafted 119 potential measures. The three main objectives are to increase the competitiveness of Austria’s freight and logistics sector, to increase the attractiveness of the location, and ensure social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Also Dipl.Ing. Franz Schwammerhöfer, Head of the bmvit overall transport division, who has recently been appointed to the newly created position of Logistics Coordinator in the bmvit, welcomes the creation of this platform for political, economic and social partners and researchers in the field of cargo transport and logistics.

In a press briefing session in the midddle of this week Federal Minister Alois Stoeger explained the policy priorities of this transport mode-neutral plan. In addition to training and education or infrastructure, these include also the improved coordination of arterial roads for cargo transport, which are essential for Austria as a business location, as well as the promotion of cost-efficient, environmentally friendly and safe means for cargo transport. The already partially implemented shift of freight traffic from road to rail or to the Danube waterway is in this sense, but there was still room for improvement, as Minister Stoeger admits. The joint vision is to make Austria the best logistics location within the area of Bavaria/Lake Constance/Northern Italy/the southern Czech Republic as well as for Central and Eastern Europe.

The working group process to define measures is now complete. What is to follow now, is the process of selecting the measures which are to be implemented, and further steps to substantiate the overall transport plan before it comes to a final political decision. Therefore these potential measures have been evaluated regarding a basic consensus, as well as the so-called triple-A rating (time required for implementation, running costs, investment costs from the view of the public authorities).
