7,200 tons of rails for the railway project Stuttgart – Ulm

The railway project Stuttgart-Ulm is the largest development concept for public rail transport in Baden-Württemberg since the 19th century. In 2017, Swietelsky Baugesellschaft (Linz) together with Rhomberg Bahntechnik (Bregenz) secured the contract for track construction and railway equipment for the new line from Wendlingen to Ulm. Since then, the two companies have been jointly responsible for the planning, execution and commissioning of the roughly 60-kilometer section of Deutsche Bahn’s “Stuttgart-Ulm Railway Project” in a consortium.

For the construction of the new line Wendlingen-Ulm the rails are now being delivered. From the beginning of December 2018 until the end of January 2019, the reloading of the 120-meter-long rails in Ulm main station from freight trains to a special truck takes place at night, which then transports them via the new construction line completed in the shell construction.

The approximately 30-kilometer section between Ulm and Merklingen is the first part of the railway project Stuttgart-Ulm to be structurally completed. Simultaneously with the delivery of the rails, the trolley masts are erected. In the spring of 2019, the construction of the slab track is to begin on which the rails will later be mounted.

In total, about 119 kilometers of rail, ie. rails for a double-track line of around 30 kilometers, with a total weight of 7,200 tons will be  delivered. Swietelsky Managing Director Peter Gal, who is responsible for railway construction, commented: “We are pleased about the timely achievement of this milestone. By bundling the expertise of two Austrian railway construction specialists, it has been possible to form a powerful team for this ambitious project.”

Figures, data and facts about rail transport:

-) Long rails of 120 meters with 60 kilograms of weight per linear meter

-) Place of production: Poland; welding to long rails in Nuremberg

-) Cargo weight: around 230 tons

-) Total transport weight including trucks: around 380 tons

Swietelsky is a leading construction company in Central and Eastern Europe. With around 10,000 employees, the Group generates more than EUR 2.3 billion in annual sales. Construction work in the Railway Construction business segment amounts to more than EUR 400 million a year.
