ABB delivers robots to automated Scania facility

The new facility is a key aspect of the company’s goal towards the electrification of heavy vehicles. Scania will invest more than SEK 1 billion (US$108 million) in the facility and is set to be fully operational by 2023.

Recently Scania partnered with the robotics company to create charging solutions for heavy goods vehicles which will also be powered by batteries manufactured by Northvolt.

Multiple ABB robots will be involved in the assembly process, including the IRB 390, IRB 4600 and IRB 6700 models, along with additional solutions to support the production process.

“The site is designed in line with Scania’s efforts to be at the forefront of industrial digitalisation, automation, and the use of advanced robotic technology to streamline production processes with increased flexibility”, said Tony Persson, Head of Scania’s battery assembly.

The advanced 193,750ft2 facility will be built next to Scania’s chassis assembly site and will be highly automated, from goods reception through to production, and then to delivery.
