Aldi Christmas sales hit £1bn

Sales at discount retailer Aldi  in the four weeks leading up to Christmas topped £1 billion for the first time in 2019; up 7.9% year-on-year.

Aldi said that total sales of beers, wine and spirits increased 9.2% year-on-year with sales of sparkling wine up 14%. Meat sales were also up 8%.

Aldi said it sold 55 million mince pies, 22 million pigs in blankets and more than 2 million Christmas puddings.

According to Kantar WorldPanel Aldi held an 8% share of the UK grocery market in the 12 weeks up to 1 December 2019 making it the fifth largest grocer in the UK.
