In 2014 national railway operators transported about 91 million tonnes (92.6%) of the total tonnage, accounting for 19.2 billion tkm (93.9%) of the total transport performance. Foreign railway operators carried 7.3 million tonnes (7.4 per cent of the transport volume) and performed 1.2 billion tkm (6.1 of the total transport performance), exclusively in transit.

40.8 per cent or 37.2 million tonnes of the goods carried by national rail transport companies in the reporting year are counted among „vehicles, machinery and other goods“, followed by 11.2 million tonnes of „ores and metal waste“ (12.3%) and „agricultural and forestry products“, accounting for 10 million tonnes or 10.9 per cent. Together these three categories accounted for 58.4 million tonnes or 64 per cent of the transport volume in 2014. About 10.2 million tonnes or 11.3 per cent were declared as dangerous goods, of which 5.7 million tonnes, more than half (55.3%) were classified „flammable liquids“.

Of 17.7 million tonnes carried by domestic enterprises in transit, 3.5 million tonnes of goods were loaded in Germany and unloaded in Italy. 2.6 million tonnes were transported in the opposite direction, together 34.5 per cent of transit tonnage carried between these two countries.
