Alois Stöger is the new „host“ in the Ministry of Infrastructure

Doris Bures, Minister of Infrastructure off duty draws balance: Investments for growth, employment and Austria as a business location

Following yesterday’s inauguration by the Federal President Heinz Fischer, the designated National Council President Doris Bures passed the official duties to the new Minister of Infrastructure Alois Stöger, who thanked his predecessor for her great support and her outstanding work as a Minister.

The new Minister of Infrastructure is highly motivated for his future task: „We have a great responsibility. Infrastructure connects people, whether by train, motorway, plane, or Internet.“ Above all ultrafast high-speed Internet was a critical infrastructure for the future, says Stoeger. In this sense, he also emphasised the importance to invest in research and technology to maintain Austria’s attractiveness as a business location in the future and secure prosperity and jobs.

Doris Bures held the office of the Minister of Infrastructure since December 2008. In these five years and nine months of her tenure, the Infrastructure Ministry has drafted 43 laws and 166 regulations.

Austria invested an average of two billion euros per year in the expansion and modernisation of its railway infrastructure under Doris Bures as Minister of Infrastructure. Ten flood control projects along the Danube will be brought forward by up to four years, which means that they will be completed no later than 2019. For the major project of the Eferdinger Basin in Upper Austria, the planning has already started. Overall, federal, state and local authorities are to invest EUR 560 million by 2019 (BMVIT 50%).

In 2012, Doris Bures has presented the overall transport plan and anchored it in the government program as the basis of transport policy: It includes strategic targets for the development of the transport system by 2025 and beyond. Key areas: Improving the public transport services, shift further transport to the railway through a good offer, modern terminals for the industry and more true costs in transport. New transport technologies shall make the transport system more efficient, environmentally friendlier and safer.
