SBB Cargo International in the black for the first time

New transports and increased productivity led SBB Cargo International to the profit zone in the first half of the year 2014; SBB Cargo posts profit once again

The cargo segment of SBB (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen) has had a successful first half of the year. Total transport performance in the cargo segment in Switzerland rose considerably by 27 per cent to 7.6 billion net tonne kilometres (last year: 6.0 billion). This is mainly attributable to the new transports on the north south corridor.

Following the positive annual results for 2013, SBB Cargo is in the black also in the first half of the year 2014: Compared with the same period last year, the results increased from CHF 3 million to CHF 15 million. SBB Cargo has been able to acquire new transports in a still challenging market environment, and maintain their position with the existing transports.

Also SBB Cargo International has developed positively. The key factor were the new transports and increased productivity; this has led to a profit of CHF 1.1 million (CHF 3.9 million compared to the first half of 2013).

The SBB Group is divided into four divisions: passengers, freight (SBB Cargo), infrastructure and real estate. In addition there are control and service functions, including the human resources and finance. The freight division has moved 48.3 million tonnes of cargo last year.
