Amazon linked to new 2 million sq ft East Yorkshire distribution hub

A major global retailer, understood to be Amazon, has been linked to a new mega warehouse development in East Yorkshire.

Wykeland Group has submitted a detailed planning application to East Riding of Yorkshire Council for a development at its Melton West business park.

Campaigners ‘Save Ferriby 2020’ – which is against the development – said that Amazon is the tenant associated with the new scheme being put forward. It noted that the Amazon name was on one of the lighting drawings as ‘Amazon Facility Specific Requirements’ within the original planning application submitted in October for the 61-acre Plot E Melton West Business Park – the reference has since been removed with new external lighting plans submitted on 4th December.

The developer has not confirmed the end user of the facility but has said: “The Melton West site has been selected by the end user from several competing locations across the North of England for the £150m inward investment.

“The proposed state-of-the-art global retail logistics facility will create up to 1,500 direct jobs, with hundreds more in the supply chain and during the busiest months of operation. It will also support more than 1,000 jobs during construction, plus hundreds more in the construction supply chain.

“The facility would provide a wide range of new employment opportunities, from warehouse roles through to technologists and logistics experts, as well as management, administration and finance roles.”

The proposed logistics facility would have a footprint of 558,000 sq ft with several mezzanine floors bring the total floorspace to 2,012,205 sq ft. The proposals are similar to other Amazon schemes in the North.

The development site has been zoned as a key, strategic location for major employment uses of this kind for nearly 25 years and was retained as this in the 2016 East Riding of Yorkshire Council Local Plan, following an extensive consultation process by the council.

Pending planning approval, it is anticipated that construction would begin next spring and the facility would be operational in autumn 2022.

The planning application also includes comprehensive proposals for the creation of a nine-acre biodiversity and wildlife corridor, which will enhance and extend the existing 35-acre Long Plantation woodland separating the development site at Melton West business park from the village of North Ferriby.
