Another tanker blots its “green” copybook

MOL has officially announced that its bulker, the Bright Century, sunk after colliding with a freighter about 23 miles east of the Shangdong Peninsula, China.
The collision occurred in foggy conditions around 05h30 local time on May 2nd, and the vessel sunk approximately forty minutes later.

The Bright Century left Dampier, Australia, carrying around 170,000 tons of iron ore bound for the port of Bayuquan, Liaoning Province.

At the time of its sinking, the vessel had around 400 tons of fuel oil and about 70 tons of diesel oil in its tanks. An oil slick approximately 5.5 km meters long and 1 km wide has been observed, and the Chinese authorities are taking the necessary countermeasures.

To date, no part of the oil slick had reached the shore.

MOL established a task force on May 2nd, and the cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

It has been reported that the other vessel involved in the collision – the Liberia-registered Sea Success – has now docked
