Asamer puts more tasks on Rail Cargo Austria

RCA and Stern & Hafferl cooperate in gravel transportation

As of the mid of October 2009 the ÖBB subsidiary Rail Cargo Austria (RCA) is to take over gravel transportations on behalf of the Asamer company between Steyrermühl and Linz Kleinmünchen. Every day 800 tons of gravel will be forwarded on the rail. This saves 14,000 truck trips per year.

Preparing for the new rail logistics project the Asamer-company in Steyrermühl built up a new rail loading station. Rail Cargo Austria is now taking steps and measures to optimise the production process, and to deepen cooperation with the regional transport company Stern & Hafferl.

In the framework of this cooperation a newly acquired traction vehicle had its premiere. In April 2009 Stern & Hafferl has ordered a route locomotive of the construction series 2016 at the Siemens AG Österreich. “This is the first time a diesel-electric route locomotive is equipped with a shunting remote control (VFFS) in Austria. This tool combined with our elaborated production process allows to achieve the highest-possible multi-functionality,“ explains Dr. Helmut Forchtner, Manager Rolling Stock Main Line of the Division Mobility at Siemens AG Österreich.

The locomotive driver of Stern & Hafferl will control the traction unit but also the shunting movements during loading, the shunting facility of the Asamer-company and will carry out the technical takeover on his/her own. Thanks to the portable remote control it is possible to use the locomotive more flexible and economically for shunting operations, which increases competitiveness. “This means reinforcement of the region as for cargo transport and avoids goods transportations being re-shifted to the road“, says Ing. Günter Neumann, Managing Director of the Stern & Hafferl transport company.
