Asfinag enhances information on parking space for heavy truck traffic

From now on, Asfinag will be providing direct information about free parking spaces for trucks in real time on a total of 135 displays on motorways and expressways. 130 new digital cameras were installed on more than 30 truck parking spaces to monitor parking spaces, tells a press release.

“We are constantly increasing the parking space available for truck drivers. The improved information about free parking adds to this service,” says Andreas Fromm, Managing Director of Asfinag Bau Management GmbH.

The display is a fully graphic LED panel either overhead or sideways of the road. The new cameras are also available as webcams on the Asfinag homepage and in their Unterwegs app. The EUR 8 million project was supported by two EU programs (CROCODILE, CEF) with EUR 2.2 million.

The service for heavy transport is structured in such a way that the vacant spaces are displayed at the nearest rest areas. This ensures a rest in the vicinity of the display.

The overview of which parking spaces are available is provided by the Asfinag employees in the nine traffic management centers, from where the displays are controlled. The new LED displays are technically upgraded so that, if necessary, traffic and construction site information can be shown.

Back in 2010, Asfinag launched the electronic information project on free truck parking spaces in Vienna and the surrounding area, followed by Linz and the A 12 Inntal motorway in Tyrol. At that time there were approximately 20 displays. The plan is to further expand the existing range of 135 information points.

In addition, Asfinag is continuously expanding its truck parking spaces. In addition to the more than 7,000 truck parking spaces currently available, around 1,100 will be added in 2019 and 2020. Almost half of the lorry rest facilities planned for 2019 will be created in the Greater Vienna area alone. But also important traffic routes such as the A 1 West, A 2 South, A 4 East and the A 12 Inntal and A 13 Brenner motorways will be equipped with new modern parking spaces.
