Austria’s airports saw a 13.5 per cent-rise in air cargo volume in 2014

Latest evaluation by Statistics Austria proves positive development of air cargo volume handled by commercial aviation in Austria

With a total of 290,930 flight movements in commercial aviation (scheduled and non-scheduled air services) in 2014, meaning a slight increase year-on-year by 0.2 per cent, a total of 238,843 tonnes (+13.5 per cent) of air cargo and 12,608 tonnes (+7.6 per cent) of air mail (transit included) was counted at the six international Austrian airports.

Air cargo throughput (excluding transit) increased by 11 per cent (+20,362 tonnes) during the reporting period to about 205,534 tonnes; volume in transit transport grew 31.7 per cent year-on-year (+8,013 tonnes) to 33,309 tonnes. Air mail (excluding transit) amounted to 12,584 tonnes, hence 7.6 per cent (+892 tonnes) above last year’s level. Transit volume amounted to 23 tonnes or 7 tonnes less.

The Vienna airport handled the lion’s share of air cargo (95.1 per cent), accounting for 227,087 tonnes (+13.4 per cent compared with 2013). Transport volume at the airports of Graz (+22.7 per cent), Linz (+15.3 per cent) and Salzburg (+10.2 per cent) also showed growth, while Innsbruck had to face a delince of 22.6 per cent.
