Automated situational awareness platform reduces close encounters for vessels by over 25%

Orca AI is said to be the world’s first automated situational awareness platform. The company this week revealed data showing that in 2022, 110 vessels using Orca AI saw, on average, a 26.9% reduction in the number of close encounter events, a 21.6% decline in sharp manoeuvres, and an 18% reduction in extreme drops of speed. 

According to Orca AI, these improvements in operational efficiency led to a 66,300 tonne reduction in CO₂ emissions in total.

The types of vessels that were monitored included tankers, containers, bulkers, and roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessels. Each of these commercial vessels were equipped with the Orca AI platform throughout 2022.

Orca AI is powered by machine learning and computer vision technologies, designed to allow fleet managers, operators, and crews to ‘make data-driven decisions in congested waters and in low-visibility conditions’. This can help reduce collisions and increase operational efficiency, cutting both fuel costs and CO₂ emissions.
