Automotive and warehousing logistics increases at Port of Vienna

Port of Vienna is to launch a new seaports hinterland service to northern Germany’s port of Rostock this autumn

International networking of eastern Austria’s biggest logistics centre – the Port of Vienna – is proceeding well. Seaports hinterland traffic from the “quatromodal“ throughput area (waterway, road, rail, close to the airport) is to be completed by a new block train service on the Vienna-Rostock route and back by September 2012. The traction operators WLB Cargo and ERS European Rail Shuttle are to start with two weekly rotations. Forwarders and industrial companies are hence offered new options for physical handling of cargo transportations from Central Europe via Rostock to Scandinavia and back. There are about 100 train services currently available from the Port of Vienna to all European seaports, the major lines linking Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam and Antwerp to Vienna. Since the end of October 2011 two weekly container trains are operated between the Port of Vienna and the Slovenian seaport of Koper.

Generating turnover at EUR 50 million and investing EUR 11 million into the expansion and modernisation of the port’s infrastructure, Vienna’s port had a strong year 2011. “What makes us particularly glad is, several business segments showed record results or big increases. Container business grew 38 per cent, a record figure. Utilisation of storage areas amounted up to 92 per cent. At the automotive terminal 83,200 vehicles were handled, which is 24 per cent more than in 2010", states Peter Hanke, Managing Director of the port’s parent company Wien Holding. Throughput of bulk and heavy cargo remained almost constant compared to last year, at about 1.14 million tonnes in 2011. Transport of these types of cargo (grains, gravel, fertilisers, road salt, mineral oil products, steel or wood) is mainly carried out on the waterway.
