BAE Systems to build 300,000 sq ft logistics centre

BAE Systems has set out plans to build a 300,000 sq ft logistics facility at Barrow-in-Furness to support the production of the next generation of submarines.

The off-site logistics facility will store submarine parts and materials within the local area.

The move is part of a ÂŁ300 million eight-year investment programme facilities for the successor programme to the Vanguard class submarines.

“The successor programme, to replace the Vanguard class submarines, remains subject to final approval in 2016, but it is vital we begin these improvements now to achieve the government’s target of having the first submarine in service by 2028, ” said Tony Johns, managing director of BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines.

“Redevelopment of the site is fundamental to the future of our business and will ensure we stay at the forefront of submarine design, build, test and commissioning.”

Work will begin in spring 2014 with the demolition of disused buildings on the central yard area to pave the way for two new buildings that will house new paint and outfitting facilities.
