Bayernhafen: 8.8 million tonnes of cargo handling in 2018

Despite the historically long low water phase, in 2018 a total of 8.8 million tonnes of goods were handled by ship and rail at all Bayernhafen locations, 2.6 per cent less than in 2017. A decline of 21.2 per cent to 2.5 million tonnes of cargo throughput is attributable to the low water phase of last year. However, this could be made up for by a significant increase in rail transhipment to a large extent: the 6.31 million tonnes of rail transhipment mean an increase of 7.5 per cent compared to 2017.

Container handling at the Bayernhafen locations Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg and Regensburg exceeded the 450,944 TEU of the previous year by 5.8 per cent in the financial year 2018 with a total of 477,087 TEU.

After investing EUR 30 million in 2017, the company invested another EUR 26 million in 2018. Investments were made in the preparation of settlement areas and in the optimization of the rail and water-related infrastructure, which runs for several years.

In 2019, Bayernhafen will, among other things, invest in the dock reconstruction in the Bayernhafen Nuremberg in order to continue to meet the increasing environmental standards. In addition, the planning for the modernization of the harbor station in the Bayernhafen Aschaffenburg is continuing. For 2019 Bayernhafen is planning further investments across all its locations amounting to around EUR 24 million.
