Boost for van market in February

The van market picked up strongly in February with particularly strong growth in the 2-2.5 tonne sector which rose 20 per cent, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

The SMMT said it was the best February performance in a decade and offset the market fall in January. As a result, registrations for the first two months, at 34,610 flat when compared to last year.

Ford’s Transit Custom retained market leadership in February followed by the Ford Transit. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter took third spot, just ahead of the Volkswagen Transporter.

SMMT chief Mike Hawes said: “February is typically a quiet month as buyers await the March plate change so the rise in demand is welcome news. However, with so much uncertainty in the UK at the moment and weak business confidence, we can expect further fluctuations in demand for the rest of the year.”
