Bremen adds space for large inland vessels

Total investment of EUR 3.7 million: bremenports company to establish new maintenance and overnight berths for barges

The city of Bremen is planning to expand the river shipping infrastructure, in order to improve the conditions at the site for the industry and strengthen the port location. In the next months the bremenports company at the Weser-river lets build berths for large barges at the port areas Am Deich and Osterdeich. The investment totals EUR 3.7 million.

The bremenports company lets build new berths at Am Deich and Osterdeich, to have sufficient space for maintenance and overnight stays for large barges at the Weser river. Therefore the old berths in both areas will be disposed of and renovated, respectively. In addition, a total of 15 new berths will be installed with a total weight of 230 tons, and water and land power supply at the new berths will be newly taken into operation. Furthermore, the required depths will be adapted to 5 meters around the berths.

So far, the inland waterways in the region are dominated by the 85-meter-long Europe-ship type. "A large motor cargo ship can carry 50 per cent more than a Europe-ship," said Martin Günthner, commercial and ports senator. As for containers, capacity of 104 TEU is about twice as large as in Europe-ship.

In the past decade, an average volume of 5.6 million tonnes of goods were arrived and departed on barges in Bremen and Bremerhaven. While cargo throughput in inland shipping has slightly increased on the Weser-river in recent years, the number of barges has dropped.
