First six months 2015: Declining sea cargo throughput in Bremerhaven and slight increase in Bremen city

As informs Martin Günthner, port senator, on 12 August 2015, total throughput volume in the Land Bremen declined by 5.9 per cent to 36.6 million tonnes (January to June 2014: 38.8 million tonnes). Receipt and dispatch of sea cargo were balanced in the current results at 18.5 and 18.1 million tonnes, respectively.

The location of Bremen city, primarily specialising in bulk cargo and not stowed containerised cargo, grew 1.5 per cent in total volume. In the first six months of 2015 statistics registered a performance of 6.2 million tonnes (same period 2014: 6.1 million tonnes). With above-average growth rates forestry products (317,000 tonnes, up 21.5 per cent) and iron/steel products (1.1 million tonnes, up 12.4 per cent) contributed significantly to the recent growth in the city of Bremen.

In Bremerhaven total turnover decreased in the first half of the year from 32.7 to 30.3 million tonnes (down 7.2 per cent). From January to June 2015, Europe’s fourth largest container port provided a throughput performance of 2.74 million TEU. This equalled a decline of 3.5 per cent. In the same period last year about 100,000 TEU more were handled on the Weser estuary.

Also automobile throughput was declining in the first half of the year. In the Bremen ports this figure was 1.07 million units (down 4.4 per cent). What gave an optimistic view was only the month of June 2015, when about 187,000 automobiles were transhipped – the best result for June, the Bremen ports have ever achieved in vehicle handling.

Many economies in or outside the European Union are struggling with problems, business with Russia and China’s economy are weakening – which is all reflected by sea cargo throughput in the Bremen ports.
